Close Encounter with a Red-tailed Hawk

Daily Photos - October 3, 2011

I was at a local conservation area this weekend working on a close up of some prairie flowers (which I'll post tomorrow) when this Red-tailed Hawk dropped about 15 feet away from me and started in on some very unfortunate little creature... Shocked the absolute snot out of me!!! These birds look formidable when you see them circling high above, but when they're taking care of business 15 feet away from you, they are intimidating as hell! I snapped a few shots which drew his attention away from his lunch and onto me. He turned and actually stared me down for a good 15 seconds before he took a few more bites of his meal and finally decided to retreat to a nearby perch!!! If looks could kill, I think he would have ended up having me for lunch instead! lol!!!

I posted two other shots from this encounter in another of my galleries. Nature Gallery
The first shot is of his open beak as he is about to "dine." In the second shot, the hawk has retreated to a treetop perch about 20 yards away. His stare was intently locked between me and the location of his kill. It's rude to interrupt someone when they are eating, so I moved on and let him enjoy the rest of his lunch...

I was using my 18-105mm for the close up work, so I couldn't get as tight in on this guy as I would have liked. As a result, the image is pretty heavily cropped. sorry about that...

Anyone able to help identify what type of plant/tree this might be? (SOOC)

This was the close up I was working on over the weekend when that Red-tailed Hawk (posting from yesterday) dropped in about 15 ft behind me. The Hawk attacked, killed, and began eating its prey right in front of me. In yesterdays post, Close Encounter with a Red-Tailed Hawk, the Hawk is actually staring me down! He became aware of my presence, or was at least bother enough by the sound of the camera shutter snapping away to take a break from his lunch to look me up and down before returning to his meal!

The hawk took a few more bites of his lunch and then decided to retreat to a treetop perch about 20 yards away to watch and wait for me to leave before continuing on with his lunch... He continued to give me the stink-eye from up in the tree. The "Treetop Perch" image was posted in another of my galleries. Well, It's 41 degrees, rainy, and really windy in Chicago today, so here's my contribution to making your day a little brighter!
Well, I'd have to say that this is my favorite time of year in Chicago! Cool crisp air, no mosquitoes, and the first signs of those beautiful and vibrant fall colors starting to show up! Can't wait for the fall foliage to really start changing over...

Well, this shot is one of my favorites from my fall archive... I've actually been going back and forth for two months now trying to decide whether I wanted post it or keep it for myself! Not sure why i've been hesitating with this one. I've never held back on posting any of my work before... I hope you enjoy it!

Well, this was taken with my iPhone, so it's not the best quality image. I was running so late for work this morning that I just didn't have time to stop, pull out the camera, and start tinkering around. The only editing was a little cropping around the edges and a small adjustment to clean up some of the noise...
